Structure of a Membrane Keypad
A membrane keypad consists of multiple layered films, each playing a vital role in ensuring durability and reliable functionality. The key components include the graphic overlay, spacer, switch layers, and adhesive backing.
The graphic overlay is the top layer, printed on the reverse side for long-lasting abrasion resistance and can be embossed for tactile feedback. Depending on the application, alternative materials like silicone may be used for enhanced durability and touch feel.
The dome retainer layer holds metal snap domes securely in place, ensuring consistent key response.
The switch layers contain the conductive traces and contact points that transmit signals. In compact designs, contact surfaces can be integrated directly onto the overlay.
The spacer layer separates the switch layers, preventing unintentional contact and ensuring precise switching only at designated points.
